A Power Struggle Between the Id and Superego

Or, if you want to relate it to Marijuana....

The Id:
I don't want to do drugs. They're bad for me.

The Superego:
Do drugs. Everyone does it. It's natural.

It all depends on what kind of person you are. Sometimes, you're superego will dominate your Id. Other times, your Id will dominate your superego.

A Quick Set of Facts

Fact Number 1:
Marijuana is used to help people suffering from glaucoma and patients suffering from cancer chemotherapy.
-WAIT. This can be replaced. They have synthesized delta-9-THC  (the drug in weed) so that people who use it for medical marijuana can still get the effects but from a pill

Fact Number 2:
Marijuana used durring pregnancy can harm the fetus.
-It causes low birth weight and phsyical abnormalities.

Fact Number 3:
Marijuana can induce euphoria and halucinations, relieve pain and nausea.

Fact Number 4:
Marijuana increases heart rate
- This is very serious in people with high blood pressure

Fact Number 5:
The drug can interfere with memory and learning for days, or even weeks, after the initial high
-NOT good for high school students, or any students for that matter.
-A study done in 2010 showed that marijuana was the most commonly used drug for 14-15 year olds at 57%
- For 16-17 year olds, marijuana was most commonly used among 72%

Fact Number 6:
The Cannabis plant contains more than 400 chemicals, including tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC, which has psychoactive, or mind-altering properties.

Mental Illness and Marijuana?

This has been a proven study.
What was te study?
To test if there is a connection between mentally ill people and their use of marijuana.
Their findings? There was.
the study showed that 63% of people tested used marijuana.
Of that, 45% tested to be ONLY using marijuana.
Of the 63%, 55% of people tested to be using drugs along with marijuana (for example weed and cocaine)

A Relation to Sociology

Nate from Gossip Girl with A LOT of weed.
So before I go completly into psychology, I just noticed a connection between our previous unit and our current one.
The connection? It's between agents of socialization and high society teens.

Due to agents of socialization, leading psychietrists believe that they negatively influence a person to turn to drugs.

Gossip Girl is a TV show about high society teens. They also
do lots of drugs, have lots of sex, and deal with many issues.
Here, the blonde (Serena) is on ecstacy while the male (Chuck)
is high from marijuana.

Growing up in an affluent society can cause a child to have anxiety, depression, and those feelings lead them to drug abuse.
What agents of socialization cause this? The family. Obviously. In a wealthy society children usually grow up in isolation from their parents' their usually agt work or on vacation. They also feel immense pressure from them to do well and be there successors; if their parents own a company, that child will have no other choice in the future but to inherit it.
So what drugs do teens from high society turn most to? In the beginning, it's marijuana and ecstacy. But then as time progesses, it turns into cocaine and in some cases, heroine.

Greetings :D

Well HELLO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So there's only a few days left until my presentation... yaaaaaay....
But it's a good thing I'm on my last unit huh!!!!!!!

So to begin, I just want to give you a brief introduction on what Marijuana does to the Brain. Or rather, how your brain gets affected when you're smoking marijuana.
(if you haven't realized, our next topic is on psychology)

Because I'm too lazy to write on all the neurosystems and what not, i went on youtube and found a video from asapSCIENCE. Please enjoy <3

Why The Hell Do These Things Matter(part 2) ??!!

Well HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO my pretties!!!!

Yes, it's that time again. The time where we finish another unit. This by far is the biggest unit of all! Why? Because weed is a social drug. You aren't gonna cut yourself a line of cocaine or shoot up some heroine during lunch, right?! Well, I hope not anyways. But my point is, that Marijuana has become so, common in our society that we hear it and think "oh, true". It's no big deal. Everyone does it. It's natural.
BULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Weed is a drug. Drugs aren't natural; I don't care where it grows from; it's still a drug, it still impairs you, and it can still kill you. No, not from overdosing; but from many other things. Like i mentioned in one of my posts, teens are stupid. They're smart enough not to drink and drive, and the rates for drunk driving have significantly decreased over the past years. However the rates for Drug driving have just been shooting up! Kids think it'll be okay to drive after having 1 or 2 joints. It's not. It's still impaired driving, and it's a huge reason why teens are getting into so many accidents and why so many people have Marijuana in their system when they die from motor-vehicle accidents. Also, weed has a clear negative impact on grades. The study i found proved that children with the worst grade are the ones who are usually out skipping class and smoking marijuana. That's so bad for them; I mean honestly, you're throwing away your future for a joint. I get they don't like school; no one really likes school. But we have to put up with it for our future. We know that getting good grades requires you to at least try, so why do people just have the mentality that it doesn't matter? It does matter. You come to class high, there's no chance of you learning anything. You skip class to get high, no chance of learning anything. We need a good future; it's as simple as that. So why throw it away over something as simple as a joint?

Peer pressure. That's why. No one's going to skip class to get high on their own (at least, I'm pretty sure). If anything they'll wait till after when they see their friends. Like I said so many times before, weed is the social drug; you do it when you're with people, not when you're alone. I mean sure, if you're home alone and bored out of your mind and you have a blunt sitting right there, you'd probably smoke it. But during school? Naw man. You'd need a friend with you. It's fun. It's better than being in a boring class. Right?
Wrong. So, so wrong, it's not even close to right.

That's why having friends who are bad influences can be seriously dangerous! Not only our opinions, but the way we dress and think and act and feel and behave are all similar to our friends in our primary social group. That's why people need to be able to reason, to take responsibility and say to themselves, "do i really want to fail school and go smoke weed?". You can have all the friends in the world, but still be able to make decisions for yourself and not base it on something your social group does. That's why I believe that out of all the agents of socialization, peers are responsible for you and whether or not you start doing drugs. If your primary social group has no interest in drugs or anything like that, then honestly, you shouldn't either. Because groups like that have other interests; boys, school, celebrities; whatever it is, your primary social group influences you to no end. It's your decision whether they're good influences or not.

Popular Weed Artists

My last post was about how the use of weed in songs can be a very dangerous thing, especially if listened to way to often. However, I never really talked about which artists or what songs are popular to our teens.  Unfortunately this isn't really my style of music, so I'm not as knowledgeable in this as I would be in say, songs from Disney princess movies. Ask me anything on those. I dare you. But either way, here we go! (please don't shoot me if I left out one of your favourites!!!)

I am only mentioning 3 artists who i've found to be some of the biggest names in the industry (of course there are many more, probably ones better than these. But please, spare me some <3 ).

Bob Marley

Of course, I HAD to start with him. If you can think back to one of my earlier posts, I wrote a little something something on Rastafarian's. Well, say hello to one! Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician. His music was NOT rap, but reggae instead :D Some songs of his that reference weed? Hmm... Well, let's see!

African Herbsman
Kaya
Ganja Gun
Rebel Music (Weed)
Burnin and Lootin
I Shot the Sherrif
3 Little Birds
All in One

Lil Wayne

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. was born in 1982, and he first entered the music world at 9 years old! He's had 9 rap albums, and surpassed Elvis Presley as the male  with the most entries on the Billboard 100 chart with 109 songs. Some of his songs that include Marijuana are...

Kush
Pussy Money Weed
Wasted
Cali Dro (Like Father, Like Son)
Blunt Blowin
Right Above It
La La La

Wiz Khalifa

Cameron Jibril Thomaz i an American rapper who came into the music scene in 2006. He has had 3 albums, and has brought us hits such as Black and Yellow.

Heart and Soul
Still Blazing

Let's Listen to that Weed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHW5Vz0HgRE

REMEMBER THIS??? It's from one of my very first posts :D
But basically, all I'm trying to say here is that this is what my next post is gonna be. Weed in Music :D

Did you know that the average teen listens to 3.5-4 hours of music everyday? From the radio, Ipods, phones, TV's, and especially Youtube, music is one of the most fundamental part of a teens' life. We listen to it when we study, read, do homework, even when we're in a boring class. Some people (like myself) listen to music to help them sleep, and when I wake up in the morning. It's a daily routine, and there really isn't anything wrong with that. Some songs though can be quite dangerous; Because music is such a big part of our lives, we've become influenced by it. Violent, abusive music is one form of dangerous music in our society. Music that talks about rape, suicide, and drug use are just other forms of it. Because my topic is on weed, it's only fair for me to mention the dangerous affects that come with listening to this risky form of music.

We've all heard it; those songs on the radio that talk about the magic plant. The most common drug in music for like, ever? Weed. Marijuana has been in songs for so long now, that there really hasn't been an increase or decrease; it's just always been. There are so many songs about weed, that no one's been able to count them all! However, there are many playlists on Youtube that helped me out a bit. The following are 2 sets of playlists that both contain songs about weed; the stoner songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzHDoHbPFy4&playnext=1&list=PLD995E8902110C336&feature=results_main

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbPy8S_ioCk&list=PL0D3384628A1496E7

Weed is most prevalent in rap music, however it's also in reggae music, jazz music, and heavy metal. Of course that's not all the genres, but definitely the most common. These days, especially in rap, music seems to be about the same old thing; money sex and drugs. What do kids seem to be in to these days? Money, sex, and drugs. Hmmm. I wonder why that could be. It's been proven that when kids listen to so much music that involve drugs and sexual activities, it's highly likely that it's contributing to a child's drug usage and sexual activity. Basically, the more risky music a child listens to, the more likely they are to take part in those risky activities. Teens who listen to more music that involve marijuana are more likely smoke it, and escalate to a higher usage of the drug. That is, compared to teens who hardly listen to music involving weed.

However, there's something positive about all this. Elementary school kids (kids not in high school) don't really focus on music all too much. Up until grade 6, for a lot of kids TV is what it's all about. Yes, music is still a huge part of their daily lives and they still can't live without it, but not as much as TV seems to be. The only reason i said this was a pro because that means our little kids aren't doing drugs or having sex. Yet. Who knows what this world will come to -.- Especially since when we're so young, we're impressionable little things. If we listen to music about sex and drugs and gettin' that pussy is what it's all about, then obviously our kids will grow up thinking that and wanting to try it. Why? Because they're impressionable. I don't care how many times I have to say that in my blog. Kids. Are. Impressionable.

Marijuana In The Movies

To put it blankly, Stoner films. There's a whole section on it on Netflix. Go check it out.

Pinapple Express
Marijuana in movies is a very tricky topic to talk about. On the one hand, they're amazingly funny. They make you laugh and not care about things; they're kind of just like, chill movies. On the other hand, it promotes illicit drug use; another big no no. Now I can enjoy a good stoner movie; I'm sure any one of us can. Getting high, doing crazy shit, having fun, and making it the time of your life. Sounds like a good time, right?

But that's the problem with these movies; instead of showing the negatives of drugs, they're promoting it. Marijuana is the most used drug in any movie, and usually the people who take these drugs in the movie don't suffer any harmful consequences. But people aren't going to stop making these movies; why? Money. Everything always goes back to money. These movies are hilarious! Why in the world would they stop making them just because it has a drug in it? "That's why it's rated R" they say. "That's why we put up warnings" they say. But honestly, no one gives a shit about those things but our parents. Children always watch rated R or 14A or PG 13 movies before they're at proper age. Because breaking the rules is cool. Because watching something meant for older, cooler kids is cool. It's not, and going down that path seriously messes a child up.

Harold and Kumar Movies
For a child, being exposed early to Rated R or PG 13 or 14A movies can have serious effects on the way a child grows up. In fact, early exposure to movies with marijuana in it is a major factor of why kids grow up and smoke weed. Watching stoner movies when you're young makes you 6 times more likely to smoke weed when you're older. When they're younger and see movies for older kids, they think it's cool, and as soon as they can they try to get their hands on whatever they think to be cool. This is why the struggle with Stoner movies is so severe.

Weed and Celebrities

HONEY BOO BOO CHILDDDDD!
Celebrities usually are our guidelines to what is cool and popular. They show us the latest fashion trends, INSPIRE the latest trends (YOLO anyone?), and they communicate all that through mass communication. Nowadays with Twitter and Instagram and Youtube and all this fun Internet stuff, people just like you and me who aren't in movies or sex tapes or making music can be famous too! But even though those people are technically famous, to me they aren't celebrities. Celebrities (to me) are people in music or movies or even sex tapes who are constantly talked about on mass communication; radio, TV, the Internet, so on and so forth. These are the people we see and hear about the most; these are the people we talk about, critisize, and honestly, just love. Even if all they're doing is acting stupid (Jersey Shore and Honey Boo Boo) people love to watch them. Why? Because our lives are boring and we need to be entertained. And some people live by them religiously! I know my brother is a total Jersey Shore reject. He spent hours watching that show, and now he does everything they do. Why? Because it's awesome and cool. If my brother thinks like this, imagine all the other impressionable 14 year olds who think the exact thing. Celebrities are looked to as role models; what they do and what they say can completely change the lives of their fans, whether they like it or not. That's what happens when you become a celebrity; people look up to you.

But what happens when our beloved celebs smoke marijuana? Well, why don't you ask all those #cutforbieber followers? A site called 4chan started this campaign as a terrible joke, but girls actually did it. Why? Because the media influenced them to do it. This issue has hand so many people talking; all our favourite Youtube people have been talking about it, too. How it's so completely ridiculous, how it's stupid, and how serious this issue is. One of my favourite youtubers, Michael Buckley, made a video on this topic. He talks about how serious this issue is, how the media is making our generation crazy, and how cutting is not the answer. You don't have to watch the video. I would recommend it, buuuuuut you don't have to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whgfzSJ0PqY

The point of this post is that, whether Celebrities like it or not, they're our role models. We centre our whole lives around these people; what they do and what they where and if they're doing it we should to. I remember when i was a tween i was very obsessed with the media and everything celebrities; I knew everything about everyone cool. So imagine, if that was me oh so many years ago, what about the new generation? They'd be just the same. The generation who cuts themselves over Bieber smoking weed because a hashtag told them to. Is that what our world is really coming to?

Good Celebrity Role Model

Bad Celebrity Role Model

Marijuana-filled Media

Ah yes, the Media. This is by far one of the biggest influences of our lives. The sociology of media is so huge, that Mr. Adams gave it a whole new section!! So instead of it being related to our agents of socialization, it's now separate. But the funny thing is, the way you and your friends conduct yourselves, the way you live your lives, is based entirely around the media! I don't care how many times you deny this; we all know that Gangnam Style dance. And how do we know it? The media. Without Facebook and youtube and 4chan and whatever else Shawn goes on, do you really think we would have ever heard of Gangnam Style? No. But it goes even farther; without the media, we wouldn't even HAVE Gangnam Style! I know right? Scary shit.

Mass Communication

Mass communication is everything these days. To explain more on this, here's Dr. Michael Morgan, a professor from the University of Massachusetts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7bVp3xfCkg

Basically all he's saying is that with mass communication, we can reach millions of people in a second, minute, day. Our possibilities really are endless. So why did I bring up mass communication? Because without it, people would still think it's a drug (which it is). Right now, many people think that it's not, because it's good for you and that it's natural and all that nonsense. Weed is cool; why? Because everyone's doing it. Where do we get this idea? The media. See? Everything comes full circle. Kids want to be cool; where do we look for cool things? From the radio and the Internet and the TV and all that is, mass communication.

A way mass communication gets around, and enters our pop culture

A School Full O' Green?

Can you tell yet what our next topic is?

Weed In Our Halls

Yes my dear friends, it's weed in school. Fun right?
Actually, it's not really. Marijuana is actually something serious in many schools, especially ours. Weed is probably the biggest drug being sold at our school (a long with many other schools). What does this mean? This means that the board of education try so hard to prevent drug usage, when it's being sold right on their own grounds. School is the easiest place for people to buy drugs; why? Because our students are the drug dealers! School provides a great market for drugs; all the niners trying to get their hands on anything cool, and all the kids who are already so used to smoking it that it's become a habit. The school socializes us; it's been in our lives for years and will continue to be in our lives (for most of us anyways) for another lump some of years as well. So what better place to sell drugs and make some nice cash then a school filled with hundreds of people? If you look at it, it's a pretty smart idea. Most of our dealers know their "clients" from school anyways, so why not deal at school? Why? Because if you get caught you're screwed. If it's not your first offence with selling guess where you're going? The slammer. You're most likely gonna be suspended or expelled from school, which is terrible for your academics. I mean, you chose drugs, got caught, and now it's on your record. You're academically screwed.

Stats On Weed And School Kids

But that's just my personal demons with the school borad. what we're talking about here is how marijuana effects marks in high schoolers. Honestly, it's just like you would think. Kids who smoke and drink and do all those crazy things are usually the kids to get D's and F's in school. They're skipping classes to go light their blunt while course concepts are being taught. How do they get notes? They borrow from their friends in the class. The teacher yells at them for missing so much classes, that eventually the kids just stop showing up. And how do they do on their exam? They pass if they're lucky. Now i'm not saying this is everyone who smokes weed; I'm saying this as a general statement. However, just like i know and you know, the more time you spend focusing on something other than school, you're grades will drop. But did you know the numbers? The stats behind these theories of mine? That 9-12 graders who get D's and F's are twice as likely to drink, but 5 times as likely to smoke weed? 5 times??! Don't believe me? See for yourself.
See? Told you. It's just proven that kids who get bad grades are usually the ones who smoke weed and slack off.

Intoxicated Driving With Teens

Intoxicated driving is something that causes accidents all over the world; usually, we hear the term "drunk driving" more often than anything else, but there is another; a term called "Drug Driving". Drug driving is driving while under the influence of a drug; be it prescription medicine, cocaine, or weed. Why is this so fatal? Because most people don't even realize that it will impare their driving. Teens who smoke just one or two blunts think "oh, I'm not that high I'll be fine to drive" end up being involved in serious car accidents. Why? Because drugs put you under the influence; sometimes, even if you just  smoked a tiny little bit, it can still impare you enough to slow your reaction time and cause a serious accident. What's even worse about all this (it gets WORSE?) is that most of the people who "Drug Drive" are high school students. You see, we're smart enough to know not to drink and drive, so why can't we be smart enough to know not to blaze up and drive? Did you know that among teen drivers killed in a moter vehicle accident, 1 in 8 teens had weed in their system? THAT'S CRAZY! Why I brought this up in the school post is because it's all about us teens; and where do teens socialize most? School. In a study conducted by Monitoring the Future (Nation's largest survey of drugs among teens) 1 in 8 high school seniors reported that in 2 weeks prior to taking this survey they drove after smoking marijuana. That's the same stats as the people who get killed in an accident caused by drug driving!
^See? I'm not lying!

Friend-ly Weed

Before I get started on friends and Marijuana, please have a look at this video. You don't have to watch it all, but just note that names and faces are shown. Like seriously? How dumb can ya'll get. You put something like this on Youtube? Come on.

An Intro To Peer Pressure

So, if you haven`t realized yet, this post will be on the next agent of socialization for children; the friends! Growing up, we have our Mommy's and daddy's pick which friends we have play dates with, which friends we get close to, and our opinions of them as well. For instance, if your parents don`t like a certain kid or a family that kid is from, chances of you being able to play with them will be nill. In this beginning stage, children are still very dependant of their family, yet they start to realize the way others see them and have to shape themselves to how others want them to be. But as we grow older and more independent, we chose our own friends, we make our own decisions, and our family slowly starts to fade into the background. Our friends are now the most important people in our lives, and we want to do everything we can to keep them in there (our lives). Why? Because we don`t want to seem uncool or loser-like. And this my friends, is the basis for peer pressure. Peer pressure is defined simply as an influence from ones peer group. So, influences from your friends. What you're primary social group is doing, you are most likely to do the same. This gets tricky when you have bad influences as friends though; real, real bad.

Why Is Having Bad Friends, Bad?

Like I mentioned before, what your primary social group is doing, you're most likely to do the exact same. So if you're close circle of friends is focused on studying and doing well in school, or focused on finding boyfriends, then you will be too. This also works the same if your primary group is focused on acting cool and doing drugs. If you're best friends with someone for like, ever, and they start doing drugs and want you to try it with them; what would you say? Would you refuse your bestest friend ever? Some people (like me) would. Others however are much more susceptible to peer pressure. The truth is, you really wouldn't know until it happened. Think back to grade 9, when all of us were just getting settled into high school and experiencing changes with our friends. All of us swearing not to do drugs because they're bad for you, or because you know it's not cool. Now, think about those same friends right now. Are they the same people they used to be? Did they keep to what they said about drugs? Did you know that 1 in 3 teens in high school admit to swearing never to do drugs, then a year, even a few months later end up doing it? How many of those people do you know? And most importantly, are YOU one of those very same people? What it all comes down to really, is the kind of people you put yourself around. By this age we're mature enough to make our own decisions and to trust our gut; we know when people are trouble or if they're going to help us become better people. If you put it like I just did, it seems like a piece of cake choosing your friends. But it really isn't so simple. If you think back to the video I posted about JB smoking weed, his company claimed that it was his friend's Lil Twists' fault, and that he's a bad influence on Justin and he's leading him down the wrong path. Sometimes you want to fit in with the cool crowd; you want to be noticed, want to be liked. And how do you do that? You do what they do. It kind of all comes back around to the whole, monkey see monkey do theory doesn't it? Eventually, you get so used to smoking weed and doing all these things that make you cool that you turn in to that kind of person, and you influence the younger generation. They look up to you (the "cool" kid) and they want to be just like you. It's an endless, repetitive, stupid cycle.

Da Drugs and Da Fam; CONNECTION?

HELLO AGAINNNNNNNNNNNNN! So it's pretty late, but because my project is due uh, next week? It's time for me to pull a much needed all nighter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So expect me to be a little bit off tomorrow. I'm not sure if that's going to be bouncing off the walls like bugs bunny crazy, or just dead tired. So we'll see what happens!

The Connection

As you can tell by the title, we're start sociology at the veryyyyyyyyyyy beginning; with the family! The family really does play a huge part in a child's socialization. It's the very first contact we have, and we learn practically everything from them; our core values, our habits, what's right and what's wrong... But how does this relate to Marijuana and children smoking it? Well in all honesty, if you're from a family that is against drugs and anything bad and you happen to be a good child (like me) who always listens to your parents, then the probability of you trying it is low. It may be because you have respect for your parents wishes, or that it's just been so pounded into you from the very beginning that you've just become accustomed to saying no to drugs (again, like me). But then what about children from not so good families? Or rather, families that have been largely absent from their lives? Also, what about families that promote smoking weed? What happens with these kids?

Absent and Not-so-good Families

Stewie from Family Guy surrounded by people in a.. thing full of weed.
Monkey see Monkey do anyone?

If you read my soci paper, yes all 10 pages of it, you'll be able to understand this correlation right away. But since no one has time to read 10 pages right now, I GUESS I could give you the condensed version. Basically, if you have trouble making parents, you're most likely gonna be a trouble making kid. You know the phrase, monkey see monkey do? Well, think of children as those monkeys. They see their parents, or whatever main role model they have in their lives, do bad things, in most case scenarios the child will end up doing the exact same thing. Why? Because monkey see, monkey do. CHILDREN ARE SO DAMNED IMPRESSIONABLE! You say one swear word, and it's held against you your whole life. But my point is, if a child sees their parents doing it it's a thousand (not to scale) times more likely that a child will copy their actions.

Now, a child belonging to an absent family is a bit different, and a bit more difficult than monkey see, monkey do. It's also strongly incorporated into deviancy, which I'll get into a bit later. Basically though, the child rearing process has a LOT to do with how a child grows up. According to a study done by informaheathcentre, delinquent drug users have lower parental monitoring. This doesn't necessarily mean that the parents are always absent from a child's life, but enough so that there's very little monitoring and seem to not really care what their child is in to, or have very little knowledge of it. You all knows these people; children who can get away with doing practically anything and not getting seriously in trouble by their parents; be it skipping school, getting suspended, going to parties, or doing drugs. However, there are still teens who even though strongly monitored by parents, they may still have friends that aren't the best influences. And THIS, is what our next post will be about :D

Buuuuuuuuuuuut we have one more approach to cover. SORRY.

Families that Promote Weed (Culture Socialization as well as Family)

Children that are born into families who promote weed are ten times more tricky than other families. If you think about it, in Canada the amount of parents who want their kids getting in to drugs isn't that high (get it? high? making a reference to weed here peopleee). However in other places where it's acceptable to smoke weed, like India or Jamaica, how would their parents teach them? Do you think they'd say "here son, smoke this blunt!" like it's nothing? Or would they have even stricter rules? In India, we know it's a social custom to smoke marijuana, and it's even a drink! So even though it may seem like this kind of upbringing is looked down in Canada, there's actually lots of positives to this. First off, if children are more familiar with weed from the time they're little kids, they're learn more about it and how to control their urges for it. They won't see it as such a big deal when they're with their friends, either. Unlike our kids these days, who are just coming into high school and are exposed to drugs, kids in places like India won't see it as such a big deal because they've been around it since they were born. This however can have a HUGE negative; Can you guess? Well, since these kids are used to Marijuana, they'll be getting into even harder drugs when they reach high school age. A BIG NO NO.

 Rastafarian's (Cultural Socialization and Family)

Rastafarian's are a HUGE culture in Jamaica; it's basically Christianity for black people. They believe that Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia, is the Black messiah who appeared in human form to free the blacks from the redemption of the whites. For Rastafarian's, Ethiopia is the Promised Land. This movement took place around 1930-1933.

There once was a man by the name of Leonard Howell. Leo (for short) launched the movement of the Rastafarian's in 1940 and recruited about 1600 people and moved them to the hills of St. Cathrine. This was basically a cult, and they called themselves the "Ethiopian Salvation Society". For a living, the people he brought over grew cash crops, including ganja (weed). Even today, many Rastafarian's keep to this.

Ganja has become sort of like the Cross to them; it's their religious symbol. Today, it's believed that Ganja is a holy herb that let's them loosen up their heads and see themselves as black people without all the pre-conditioned forces of the European society. Ganja's the key to new understandings of the self, universe, and of course God. It brings you to a level that you can't perceive without it, and it brings about fusion with all living beings. At least, that's what they believe.

So why does this matter?

Well, it's a culture surrounded by weed. How doesn't it matter. However just like I mentioned before, bringing weed into a child's life at a young age has it's benefits. It's just like India; the children are already used to it so they won't depend on it as much or be so affected by it. However, the negatives of this is also the same; because weed, the gateway drug, has already been exposed to them, the children will go looking for other new things to experience.

Why The Hell Do These Things Matter?!

Explanation:

My topic is whether or not Marijuana has become too mainstream these days. My answer, is yes. What's my reasoning? Well, let's look back at all my posts so far, that delve into the anthropologist side to marijuana. We started off exploring the world, seeing the different kinds of traditions from China, Jamaica, and India that involve the plant. We learned that weed, before people started smoking it, was used in clothes, ropes, and a power to drive away the bad spirits. It was then learned that you could extract the oil and put it in medicine. So, basically from weed we have clothes, rope, medicine, and lots and lots more stuff that people use everyday. And that's okay! I'm completely pro using weed as what it was meant to be used as; something beneficial that can lead to the discovery of new things (medicines, rope, clothes, etc). However, it's when you take it and use it as a drug that I put my foot down. The Summerians believed that smoking pot would put them in touch with god and give them courage; personally, I think that's stupid. It didn't put them in touch with god; it just let them listen to what they were really feeling. And as for the courage part? Bull. If they needed help being courageous, then there sure as hell would have been something else back then for that. I know that was a long time ago, but I mean come on. It's weed. Plants aren't meant to be smoked.

Now, let's not get me started on India and Jamaica. Too late. I'm starting. Indians drink weed. I know I know, it's part of their culture and I have no right to critisize it. But seriously? It's a plant. Not only that, but they use it in "tantric sex acts". Like they can't get pleasure from just regular sex? They gotta go get high first? Where's the love and passion in that? I don't see it. And what if they get so high that they don't know what the hell they're doing? What if they have diseases or don't use a condom? Yes, lots of what ifs. That's why regular, plain old fashion sex is the way to go. In my opinion, of course.

We also have to look at the history again. In 1938, the production of cannabis was banned. It's use was not needed anymore, and the demand for cotton surpassed the demand for weed. Even with medicine, weed looks like it has run its course. Yes, it was popular as medicine between 1800 and 1900, but in the early 1890's doctors discovered Aspirin, and weed was not needed yet again. My biggest problem is that, in 1915 Marijuana first became an official drug. According to the dictionary, a drug is a habit-forming medicinal or illicit substance, especially a narcotic. Since it's already a drug, a big no no, then why in the world do people want to try to make it legal now?! A drug is a drug. It has the exact same effects as it did in the past; are you saying our ancestors are wrong? That it doesn't cause all these issues and makes you, well, fucked up? I think it does, and I think it did, and I think it always will. Yes, people use it; it is the most used illegal drug used in the world. Why? Because of excuses like "it's natural" or "it's just a plant". I'm calling bull.

The Green Plant and The Green Paper

Hey there everybody! I hope you're all enjoying your final days of the winter break <3 so I haven't been posting as much as I should have been... but that's okay! I'm gonna do a catch up this weekend : 3 and well, now.

So, this post is called the green plant and the green paper. Obviously, the green plant is referring to marijuana, and the green paper would be...? MONEY. Yes, it's time to talk about the economy! (FUN.) The debate around the economic factors of weed have been around for years, and it's actually probably one of the only parts to legalising marijuana that I find to be beneficial. However, as I'll show you after, the cons to legalizing weed still outweigh the pros. Obviously.
Before I begin, please watch the video below. It's a news report from CNN from 2010 going over some of the pros and some of the cons that would come with legalizing Marijuana and it's affects on the economy.

^Video. Sorry about the crappy quality!!!

Alright. Now that you've (hopefully) watched that video, I shall begin!!!!!

Jeffery Miron

Jeffery Miron
Jeffery Miron is a professor at Harvard who conducted a rather large study of how marijuana can benefit the economy. With this study he wrote a paper called "The Budgetary Implications of Marijuana Legalizations". That;s great, but  so did a lot of other people. So what makes this man so famous? Well, he claims his study proves that legalizing weed could save the U.S. 7.7 billion a year. That's uh, kind of a really big number, especially since the States is so pressed for money. Also, legalizing it could rack in a serious amount of revenue from taxes. He figured out that at the same tax rate as alcohol and cigarettes, marijuana's taxes would bring in 6.2 billion dollars!!!!!!!!!! Again, that's kinda a lot of money, and it's not like the States don't need it. Like I mentioned before they're pressed for money, and it's so true! With all the budget cuts and the amount of people being tossed in jail for marijuana, lots and lots of money is being lost. Miron estimated that if weed became legal, then the States would save 7.7 billion dollars by reducing the enforcement and incarceration costs. So basically, we make weed legal, our government gets more money. Well, the States does. Canada would too, if they made weed legal. Which i hope to gos they don't. Now this study is only on Marijuana. There are many more studies that prove that if we make EVERY drug legal, then the amount of money that we could save would be enormous. Like, 46.7 billion dollars. But legalizing every drug? Insane. Legalizing Marijuana, not AS insane.
